Week 4
Sunday - Thursday

You've lost four in the past week—Machias, Vanitas, Natalia and Edna. Just in time for the fourth week to roll around, for those of you who are superstitious. But it really isn't like you could forget that death is a common occurrence in this castle, whether you believe in legends or not. Some of you might find solace in the chance to recuperate and move on, if you're still up for companionship with your fellow warriors.

Either way, dawn is soon upon the castle and like it or not, you will all have to face whatever comes this week.

Like before the pattern repeats itself, with new areas revealed for you to explore. It may be that something worth discovering lies in wait to be found, or you can simple enjoy the new additions for what they are. Distractions are most likely welcome, regardless of your feelings of the past week.

[look, it wasn't his idea to throw an afterparty. It just wasn't. But... he is easily bullied by tiny children, and he'd already promised Hiyono and Ayumu. So, Mako is making steamed pork buns for everyone.

This is more than he's ever made in his life at once, and gotta admit, some came out better than others. But they're all at least delicious and 100% homemade.

Also, he's kind of surprised that anyone trusts food not made by them, but at least you have the assurance that Mako has no clue how poison works.

Slipped under their doors are brief notes, since cooking is hard work. Mako's handwriting is very clear and neat:

Steamed pork buns in the Great Hall. I promise, they're not poisoned.

.... he's working on it, okay.]

EXECUTION
Saturday, Week 3

WELL DONE, WARRIORS

Before anyone realizes it, time is up. At first, it's brought on by the sound of an ancient-sounding gong that's banged loudly and incessantly throughout the entirety of the trial room. The noise is enough to cause a heavy distraction from any lingering conversations and preoccupations in the midst of the trial. When the banging ceases, the golden box that rests behind the green curtain fades temporarily from sight. Everyone understands, however, that by now that this isn't exactly the only thing that would herald the end. After all, it wouldn't be right for everyone to be suddenly released without knowing what the verdict is, correct?

THIRD TRIAL
Saturday, Week 3

UNCOVER THE GUILTY PARTY

No one can resist the tug that urges them forward and into the Great Hall. There's no point in lingering within the safe confines of your bed or loitering in the castle halls. Neither will shield you from these tedious trials nor will they keep you from witnessing the ghastly scenes that follow. Most of you have reluctantly accepted this as your reality. Right now, it probably feels like there's no stopping the course you're on. All you can do is hold on tight and wait for Sunday to come. If you can just get through this trial, surely next week won't end in disappointment and tragedy.

It's only when all twenty-two of you are present that the doors in the Great Hall fly open, allowing everyone to enter into the trial room. The only surprise here it is if anyone's still shocked by the display.

As soon as you enter, it's easy to see that the only difference from last week is there are less of you to fill the seats around the table. Likely because of how spacious the room is, with so many of your number missing it's starting to feel a little lonely. With a quick glance, you can see the profiles still lining the walls. Their presence serves as a grim reminder of those whose lives have been lost, just in case the absence of their voices wasn't enough.

When everyone settles into their respective seats, The Sage's cold voice seeps in through their pendants.

"It is time, my warriors, to meet the challenge head on. Thus far, your quick wit and perseverance have prevented these trials from meeting an unrighteous end. As you come upon your third tribunal, I can only ponder if this trend will continue.

May you be blessed with only the best of fortune. You will need it."

As soon as the Sage finishes speaking, five images flicker into sight as if brought to life by a projector. Seeing how there's no such device present, it may not be a stretch to consider magic is at work here.

Soldier on, Warriors.

Despite the turmoils of last weekend and the disappearance of two young boys into the pond, things have looked moderately up this week. The motive was met with mostly unified skepticism; if you could really call it a motive. Some among you saw it as more of a veiled threat than anything else but weren't really moved either way.

You know what they say about perception, right? It's all in the eyes of the beholder, and threats are no different. Especially when they're personal, maybe even more so when they're personal.

As morning dawns and the obnoxiously punctual rooster crows, everything seems peaceful. At least until you hit the Great Hall. There's a number of bloody drag marks stretching from the kitchen to the castle doors. Tragically, the night may not have passed as peacefully for everyone else here as it did for you.

Week 3
Sunday - Thursday

The beginning of the third week starts like the rest, even with the loss of three of your fellow warriors: Chiaki, Hei, and Senhime. Despite your best hopes, it doesn't seem like the trend of murders is going to change: though at least there is some relief to be had from the trial's somewhat unexpected conclusion. The mood in the group is undoubtedly different, but perhaps this experience has made you all stronger— at least one could hope.

In the end, what else can you do but move on?

Like last week, it seems another pattern has established itself: with new areas of the castle for you to explore. Who knows, maybe this week you'll discover something else worthwhile in its depths. Or you can simply focus on surviving— after the past week, surely no one can blame you. Whatever choices you make this week are ultimately yours and yours alone, for better or for worse.

[Tiki wanders into the great hall expecting company, expecting a full room just like before to abate her loneliness and what she finds instead is...Mahiro, chillin'.

And no one else.

Okay. Cool. Fine. She'll throw a goddamn party herself IF THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING, TRY HER.

So she drags one (1) rude teen into the kitchen despite protests that he can't cook, finds Eizen actively in the middle of cooking, and takes full advantage of the situation and also her own cute charm until curry for two turns into curry for twenty four.

Everyone will find notes slipped under their door, courtesy of Tiki's new gopher since he refuses to cook, the first part written in loose, loopy handwriting like an elementary schooler who hasn't quite gotten the hang of the cursive they've been taught:
]

Let's meet in the Great Hall together in about an hour and have dinner again this time, so nobody has to be alone.

[aaand under that in a completely different set of handwriting:]

I don't know why we're doing this after someone died from getting poisoned through food but at least there won't be any fucking cake. Don't come if you don't want to.

[hm. well.

in the Great Hall, Tiki's hard at work setting up Eizen's mabo curry for the taking (and she's bullied him into making exactly one plate of non-spicy curry because she loves Hanyuu), and also hard at work into bullying Mahiro into helping her set up silverware and plates and beverages. It's not much, but it's here.

SECOND TRIAL
Saturday, Week 2

UNCOVER THE GUILTY PARTY

For the second time, all 26 of you are compelled by an irresistible force to come to the Great Hall. The more compassionate among you may feel a sense of blossoming dread as the word hits you. Second has such a dreary feel to it when you realize it marks the beginning of a pattern. Should anyone try to resist the tug for this reason or any other, they'll find themselves nudged forward by a familiar. Attendance is, as before, mandatory.

Ten minutes pass after last of you arrive and nothing happens. Consider it a penalty for the stragglers, should there be any. Tardiness is not rewarded here, not even if it's by a slim margin. Eventually, the two heavy doors do open and reveal the second set of stairs. Nothing has changed in the trial room since the last time you entered; it's still unnecessarily vast, still excessively extravagant, and the profiles are still lining the walls. More time slips away as everyone takes their place at the round table. Once they have, a calm—yet somehow strained—voice resounds through the room.

"It's time, my warriors, to meet the challenge head on. What happens next will be determined by you. Will you allow Hei's killer claim their prize... or will you successfully thwart their efforts? May you be blessed with only the best of fortune. You will need it."

As soon as the Sage finishes speaking, five images flicker into sight as if brought to life by a projector. Seeing how there's no such device present, it may not be a stretch to consider magic is at work here.

Carry on, Warriors.

A week has passed since the last murder, and after witnessing what happened to Chiaki, maybe that's helped put things into perspective for everyone here. Or maybe it hasn't.

Either way, dawn brings about a new day, complete with the usual annoying crowing. Thankfully there aren't any corpses outside of the dorm room doors, but that doesn't mean that the rest of the castle has been spared the same courtesy.

Only one way to find out, right?

Friday's harrowing events are clear in the minds of manyfirst and foremost, the death of Rika Furude, and of course the reveal and subsequent "sentencing" of Asch the Bloody. It also serves well as a reminder to everyone that the gloves are off, there won't be an easy way out for anyone and it is unlikely that there will be an option to 'wait it out' in the hopes of not participating in this 'game'. Or, as The Sage and The Teishu put it:

The Challenge.

Despite how you felt about the trial, it's likely that some rest would be welcome after all that transpired. Fortunately, some of your fellow warriors have taken it upon themselves to provide a reprieve of sorts, if you'd rather not be alone.

As if the events of the trial are supposed to be nothing but routine, dawns comes once more Sunday morning, punctuated with the sound of the rooster crowing obnoxiously. Any light sleepers hoping for their rest to not be disturbed may find themselves disappointed. Though, if anyone should wish, they may feel free to try to fall back asleep.

But, maybe that time can be better spent wandering. It seems that some places may have mysteriously unveiled themselves. It might do well to check them out. Or not. How anyone chooses to spend their time is ultimately up to them.

[So yeah, that trial was totally a thing. But if there's one thing Jansen knows, it's how to deal with crap like this. You gotta move on and try to do what you can do rather than getting upset about what just happened. Right now, they don't need to be mulling over this too much.

So he'll go around and slip some papers under the doors of everyone still alive. On each he writes the following: Let's meet in the Great Hall in about an hour. I think we could all use a good meal and some company right now.

And true to his word, he'll have some food prepared. Nothing too special, but it's warm and tasty and there is no fruit involved in its making. He cooked up some meats and also made some rolls and simple side dishes. There's enough to feed everyone so dig in!

Also, thanks to Ayumu there will be cookies and other not fruity baked goods available as well.]

FIRST TRIAL
Saturday, Week 1

UNCOVER THE GUILTY PARTY

Whatever assurances you had about maintaining peace and tranquility here have unfortunately been put to rest. For most, it's the grim realization that the situation they face is not one to underestimate—your ordeal has just begun. Eventually everyone is directed to the locked room in the Great Hall, any stragglers finding themselves pushed and prodded by the familiars.

Once you've all gathered the two expansive doors swing open, revealing a set of stairs. Strange, it didn't look the castle had a second floor before, did it? It's easy to see that the room is rather expansive, easily fitting in 30 people. Or rather, the 29 who are still alive.

The room is furnished extravagantly with green and gold carpets that litter the ground, complete with intricate embroidery. Tapestry hangs from the walls, the sigil of a nation, a serpentine gold dragon. In the middle of the room sits a large, circular table, designed to seat at least 30 individuals. There is a gap in the middle of the table, revealing part of the floor, but here it is seemingly made of opaque glass. There are no chairs at the table, although there are pillows piled in a corner of the room for some semblance of comfort. Throughout the room there are a few statues of unknown figures (coated in gold) sitting in various meditative poses.

If anyone decides to look up, they'll see that there's just a regular ceiling, though it hangs very, very high above them. Once everyone has taken a seat or standing nearby a spot at the round table, there is a familiar calm voice coming in. You'll also find the profiles of all warriors present on the walls.

"It's time, my warriors, to take the challenge head on. It is up to the rest of you whether Rika's killer will claim their prize, or if you will successfully thwart their efforts. I grant you all the best of fortune. You will all need it."

With those words, five images of five individuals among the rest of you flicker into sight, almost as if brought to light by a projector. But, seeing as it's none, all that can be derived is that it's by a spell of some sort. Well, game on, everyone.

One step outside of the bedrooms will prove you are utterly wrong, however.

[personal profile] thecastle
While the meeting you had with your hosts was quite strange, surely it could have gone worse, no? But at the very least, you received information that makes the situation at least a little more clear to everyone. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of those situations where answers beget mystery on top of mystery. And there's still that one large question that looms over the group: will anyone actually go along with the game? Would the people around you truly willingly dip and stain their hands in blood in order to sustain their lives? As the night settles in, that question may linger on your mind.

Regardless of your thoughts and feelings about this whole ordeal, night eventually turns to day, marking the beginning of a new week. All of yesterday's happenings were real, and there's nothing so far available to refute that. Mostly for worse, but for a few of you, for better.

For now you're free to explore the castle as you see fit, and get to know your fellow warriors better. It seems you'll be here a while, so you might as well get comfy, right? For those who would be inclined to sleep in, you'll be met with the ridiculously loud sound of a rooster crowing at dawn. Of course, if you'd rather go back to bed after nothing's stopping you— but is it really wise to sleep the day away?

Greeting

thecastle: (sᴀɢᴇ)
[personal profile] thecastle
Several hours have come and gone, and though you might be less confused than you were when you first arrived, there are still so many unanswered questions. Not to mention you haven't seen or heard from the person (or is it persons?) in charge. Such a thing must be quite frustrating by now, no?

Well, it looks like that might change soon.

At some point, everyone will feel nudged by a mysterious force that seems to pull on their desire to make their way toward the Outer Courtyard. Though your movements are your own, and no one is forced to act against their will, the idea to gather there is firmly set in everyone's mind. Should anyone tarry, an azure-colored minion will gently poke and prod you toward your apparent destination in an aggressively friendly manner.

Once everyone has gathered into the Courtyard, you'll be met with what seems to be... a whole lot of nothing. Nothing different from the usual that is, which while still scenic, is nothing short of a major letdown. But suddenly something shifts, you might feel a pull on the pendant against your chest, and your eyes close for just a moment— was it just a strong breeze perhaps? When you open your eyes again, things certainly don't look any different, but--

Wait, were there always this many of you? Looks like there's two extra people among you now.

One of them is of average height cloaked in white robes, pale-colored skin, with a hood obscuring the top half of his face, his eyes hidden well from sight. His hair seems to be somehow obscured as well, not even a glimpse of it's color visible. The young man (he might pass for a teenager, but he also doesn't look as young as some of the kids here either) is standing straight, albeit with a relaxed sort of air about him. His lips are also curled slightly upwards in an almost-smile, but altogether with his hooded appearance, assist in giving him an unreadable expression.

The other is taller, and though his face is also partially obscured by the hood drawn over his face, you can make out enough of his basic features. His hair rests just above his shoulders, pin-straight, and oddly a peculiar shade of white— or perhaps it's better to call it pearl, as it seems light pink in certain light. What might be more striking are his eyes, which are a cool shade of lilac, though there's a certain hardness to them. Whoever he is, he certainly doesn't seem to care about a proper fashion sense any, the two hanging earrings he's wearing in unmatched blue and green, a testament to that apparent fact. Unlike his partner he seems to be a bit older, around his mid-twenties, though it might just be his expression that lends to that assumption. All things considered, his expression is rather neutral, as he waits for the other man to speak.

The shorter of the two gives a quizzical smile, and when he speaks, his tone sounds simultaneously wistful and gentle at the same time.

"Welcome, my warriors, I am the Sage, and you may call my partner, the Teishu. I am quite glad to know and see that your travel here was a safe one. Come now, my friends, might you wish to partake in some tea?"

"At the moment, we only have black."

A pause. "Oh, and if you have any questions, I suppose we'll try to answer those too."

( OOC: sage=black, teishu=purple; feel free to try to talk to one of them specifically or both of them, threadjacking is fine! Rule #2 is in effect, so we would not encourage fisticuffs without permission. )

Beginning

thecastle: (ᴄᴀsᴛʟᴇ)
[personal profile] thecastle
One moment you were elsewhere, surely speaking to your friends, fighting in a battle of your life, dying, or even in a state of non-existence in its entirety. It doesn't matter now, since when you open your eyes it’s become clear that not only is everything around you foreign and unfamiliar, so is everyone. And there seems to be a fair lot of you, at that.

It's easy to discern a few things upon a cursory glance, once you pick yourself up from the field of grass you're resting on. The place you've awoken in seems to be fairly tranquil, for the first few moments at least, and the view of a newly budded sakura tree is among the first that will greet you. In the distance, is a towering castle that manages to look all at once both imposing and welcoming at the same time. There's also an odd pendant around your neck, which you'll find won't come off despite your best attempts. In your pocket you'll find a room key, engraved with a number.

The weather is currently cool, with the sun brightly shining in the sky, though there are a few too many clouds to make it a completely clear day. While most of them appear rather normal, every so often you might spot one that looks just a bit off— like a storm cloud that's completely lost it's way. Lucky for you, it doesn't seem like you're going to have to worry about any inclement weather anytime soon, as they'll vanish from your vision as quickly as they came.

A large stone wall surrounds the entirety of the castle, though it's anyone guess why that is— maybe it's for your safety, maybe it's to keep you trapped, or maybe it's for another reason entirely. The only breach in the wall is a single gate that looks like it certainly led to the outside at one point, but that too has been cordoned off by solid stone.

Fortunately, there's nothing to stop you from entering the castle itself, where you'll find it's pretty grand all things considered. The lighting inside is provided not by electricity, but by magical flame that adjusts to the time of day or night. Actually, if you're looking for anything electronic anywhere, or even a simple power outlet, you'll be sorely out of luck.

For now, it might be best to explore and make some sense of where you are and why you're here— maybe one of your fellow travelers might know something? There are some plaques in the Great Hall that might catch your interest given their focus, in addition to one ridiculously large golden one that seems to bear rules.

Welcome, fellow warriors, to your very long stay.
