Not typically, no. You usually have to use both hands, and be very precise with your swinging, just because there is no grip on the handle.
[ of course the oni were the exception, thanks to...super strength i guess? hanyuu can use it one-handed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ]
But it proved useful for making an enemy stay down once they were hit--multiple blades on one sword, you see?
[ imagine getting stabbed three times at once ]
