Beginning

One moment you were elsewhere, surely speaking to your friends, fighting in a battle of your life, dying, or even in a state of non-existence in its entirety. It doesn't matter now, since when you open your eyes it’s become clear that not only is everything around you foreign and unfamiliar, so is everyone. And there seems to be a fair lot of you, at that.

It's easy to discern a few things upon a cursory glance, once you pick yourself up from the field of grass you're resting on. The place you've awoken in seems to be fairly tranquil, for the first few moments at least, and the view of a newly budded sakura tree is among the first that will greet you. In the distance, is a towering castle that manages to look all at once both imposing and welcoming at the same time. There's also an odd pendant around your neck, which you'll find won't come off despite your best attempts. In your pocket you'll find a room key, engraved with a number.

The weather is currently cool, with the sun brightly shining in the sky, though there are a few too many clouds to make it a completely clear day. While most of them appear rather normal, every so often you might spot one that looks just a bit off— like a storm cloud that's completely lost it's way. Lucky for you, it doesn't seem like you're going to have to worry about any inclement weather anytime soon, as they'll vanish from your vision as quickly as they came.

A large stone wall surrounds the entirety of the castle, though it's anyone guess why that is— maybe it's for your safety, maybe it's to keep you trapped, or maybe it's for another reason entirely. The only breach in the wall is a single gate that looks like it certainly led to the outside at one point, but that too has been cordoned off by solid stone.

Fortunately, there's nothing to stop you from entering the castle itself, where you'll find it's pretty grand all things considered. The lighting inside is provided not by electricity, but by magical flame that adjusts to the time of day or night. Actually, if you're looking for anything electronic anywhere, or even a simple power outlet, you'll be sorely out of luck.

For now, it might be best to explore and make some sense of where you are and why you're here— maybe one of your fellow travelers might know something? There are some plaques in the Great Hall that might catch your interest given their focus, in addition to one ridiculously large golden one that seems to bear rules.

Welcome, fellow warriors, to your very long stay.
browbeater: Because I hate them for not asking me if I wanted starbucks. (Who ordered the pumpkin spice latte?)

It looks true. But I don't recall giving it to anyone.

[He stares at the plaques, and it's... pretty easy to identify names, since the pictures are so helpful. He doesn't even remember taking that picture, which is kind of creepy.]

How did they get these pictures?

Right, that seems to be the trend at the moment.

[But the question about photographs gets her to pause.]

It's ... strange. It hadn't occurred to me to question that as I'd assumed these pictures had been found on the internet or something along those lines, but now that you mention it.... I don't ever recall ever posing in front of a red background. I suppose it could have been edited that way, but...

[Ugh. She trails off.]

Given the state of technology here, that seems less and less likely, huh.
browbeater: Seriously, what's your name? (Hope? Stacy? ... Jane?)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-07-30 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... Taking a picture isn't as difficult as it used to be, but the film isn't cheap, so I don't even know of any crazy fans that would have wanted a picture of me in practice gear. And I've never seen a color photograph, so that's gotta be even more expensive.

[he pauses-- and then thinks to some of the comments he's heard. Which brings his second question,]

The technology is a little old fashioned, but it's not that far off from what you'd see at the air temples.

[another pause, and then he just decides to cut to the chase.]

What's the internet? What technology?

[...Oh.

Misora stares for a moment and breaks into a genuine smile. The question isn't technically funny, but.... the preceding lead in had led her to think the ending of it would be less anticlimactic.
]

Well... [She rubs the back of her head.] It's a little hard to explain, but think of the internet as being a very large database of information that's easily accessible. Rather than storing it in a tangible form, say like a book in a library, it's stored as electronic data.

[...Er wait, is she going to have to explain "electronics" too. Yipes.]

As for technology... well, what I meant was that this place seems to lack a lot of the resources that are available to me back home.

[She gestures at one of the torches as a example.]

We wouldn't use fire to light up the interior of a building, for example.
browbeater: I will logic the shit out of this. (Je pense donc je suis.)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-07-30 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[his next question has to do with databases-- but then he thinks better of it. He can ask those questions later, theoretically. And they sounded like the type of thing Asami would be more interested in, rather than him.

But then...]

It depends. Fire's useful for stuff like that. [a pause, and then he places his hand to his chin, thinking]

But this is extremely weird. I was willing to write off some of this as... well, spirit world stuff. But the type of thing you're talking about sounds almost like time travel. That's... worrying.

[personal profile] gyakusatsu 2017-07-30 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Eh? Spirit world stuff?

[Misora's turn to be confused apparently.]

browbeater: Ooooooh it's too real. (Default)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-07-30 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah-- you know.

The spirit realm. It's... kind of a big deal now?

[... isn't it obvious?]
gyakusatsu: (十)

[personal profile] gyakusatsu 2017-07-30 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
[.... ]

...uh, I'm not really sure what you're talking about, I'm afraid. Would you mind explaining, Mr Mako?
browbeater: (I'd make you my prison wife.)

[personal profile] browbeater 2017-07-30 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
[he pauses, and then exhales.]

It's the realm where all the spirits live. It's... hard to explain if you've never been there. Have you seen a spirit?
gyakusatsu: (十)

[personal profile] gyakusatsu 2017-07-30 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
....Not quite. As far as I'm aware, spirits are more of an....optional belief.

[A beat.]

..But the way you're talking about it, that's an incredibly ignorant position to have in your world, huh.
